Why Did My Nationwide Insurance Go Up?

Nationwide's own reports and state filings in Texas, Connecticut and California show why its auto prices rose in 2023 and 2024, and what has changed since.

Nationwide auto customers saw their largest increases in 2023 and 2024, after a stretch in which the company's claim costs ran ahead of its prices. Nationwide said that in 2023 loss costs in personal lines were "amplified by stubbornly high inflation," and that "significant rate and underwriting actions" followed 1. State records show what those actions looked like: in Texas, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company filed auto increases of 7.6%, 12.0% and 7.9% between April 2023 and January 2024, and in Connecticut, Nationwide Insurance Company of America received an approved 24.0% increase effective April 26, 2024 4 6.

Since late 2024 the Texas filings have pointed down, with decreases of 6.4% and 5.0% 4. Every one of these percentages is an average for a company's existing policyholders in one state, not a forecast for any one renewal. If your Nationwide bill went up recently, the reason may be a filing by the specific Nationwide company that insures you in your state, or a change on your own policy. This page walks through the record. We are not affiliated with the insurers named.

Which Nationwide company insures you

Nationwide is a brand, and it sells auto insurance through several legal companies. Each one files its own rates in each state. In the records on this page, the filing companies include Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, Nationwide General Insurance Company and Nationwide Insurance Company of America, and trade press also names Crestbrook Insurance Co. as a Nationwide subsidiary 4 6 7. The company printed on your declarations page tells you which filing applies to you. Two Nationwide customers in the same state can be insured by different companies, so their prices can move differently in the same year.

What Nationwide said about its losses

Nationwide is a mutual company, and its annual releases describe the pressure behind the increases.

In its release on 2023 results, published March 5, 2024, Nationwide said the property and casualty industry was challenged by severe weather and by inflation in claim payments, and that loss settlement costs in personal lines were "amplified by stubbornly high inflation for much of the year" 1. It said "significant rate and underwriting actions drove a strong fourth quarter and will accelerate performance into 2024" 1. In plain terms, the company was paying more per claim than it had priced for, and it raised rates and tightened underwriting to close the gap.

The size of that gap shows up in a trade report on Nationwide's 2024 midyear results. Coverager reported that Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company had a net underwriting loss of $187.5 million for the first six months of 2024, down from a $1.5 billion loss in the same period a year earlier 2. These figures cover all of the company's property and casualty lines, not auto alone, but the direction matches the rate filings below.

By 2025 the picture had changed. In its release on 2025 results, Nationwide said its property and casualty business "delivered favorable underwriting results through disciplined execution" despite a year of severe wildfires and convective storms across the industry 3. The release gives no auto-specific figures.

Texas: the filings by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company

The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) publishes each filing with a percent change that it describes as the estimated impact on existing policyholders, which can be higher or lower for any one person 5. A closed filing means TDI has finished its review 5. Each closed filing below carries the closed type "Reviewed" in TDI's data 4.

ReceivedPercent changeRenewal effectiveStatus
December 19, 2024-5.0% 4March 12, 2025Closed
September 13, 2024-6.4% 4November 5, 2024Closed
January 29, 20247.9% 4July 1, 2024Closed
September 27, 202312.0% 4January 1, 2024Closed
April 25, 20237.6% 4July 1, 2023Closed

May 17, 20225.0% 4July 1, 2022Closed
January 28, 20222.0% 4May 2, 2022Closed

Six increases filed between January 2022 and January 2024 took effect at renewal on dates from May 2, 2022 to July 1, 2024, so some Texas policyholders may have seen increases at more than one renewal 4. TDI's data shows no nonzero auto rate change for this company since the December 2024 filing 4.

Connecticut: approved increases in 2024

Connecticut's Insurance Department publishes a yearly table of private passenger auto rate filings it approved, with the change for liability, physical damage (collision and comprehensive) and the total 6. For filings with 2024 effective dates, it lists these Nationwide companies:

CompanyEffective (new business)LiabilityPhysical damageTotal
Nationwide General Insurance CompanyJanuary 18, 2024-0.8% 69.9% 63.1% 6
Nationwide General Insurance CompanyApril 14, 20246.3% 65.5% 66.0% 6
Nationwide Insurance Company of AmericaApril 26, 202423.3% 624.9% 624.0% 6
Nationwide Mutual Insurance CompanyApril 26, 20243.7% 67.8% 65.2% 6
Nationwide General Insurance CompanyNovember 23, 20244.7% 61.1% 63.3% 6
Nationwide Mutual Insurance CompanyNovember 23, 20244.4% 62.4% 63.7% 6

The same table lists 0.00% changes for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company in January 2024 and for Nationwide Insurance Company of America in November 2024 6. The spread is the point: in the same state and the same year, a customer of Nationwide Insurance Company of America faced a 24.0% average increase on one filing while a customer of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company faced 5.2% on its filing 6. The department's cover letter for the year said significant rate pressure continued for auto, tied to supply chain constraints and inflation 6.

California: increases reported in January 2024

In January 2024, ProgramBusiness reported, citing Best's State Rate Filings, that the highest overall private passenger auto increase enacted in California since the start of November 2023 was 31.1% for Crestbrook Insurance Co., a Nationwide subsidiary, and that Nationwide Insurance Company of America was granted a 27.6% overall increase 7. The report does not give effective dates or policyholder counts 7.

Why your own Nationwide bill may still have gone up

Even where recent filings are flat or down, a renewal can rise because of something on your own policy:

  • A new accident, claim or ticket on any listed driver.
  • A new driver or vehicle, especially a teen driver or a car that costs more to repair. See adding a teen driver.
  • A move, since rates are set by area.
  • A lost discount, such as a multi-policy or telematics discount. See why discounts disappear at renewal.
  • A coverage change, such as higher limits or a lower deductible.
  • Your company's own filing. The Connecticut table shows how much the Nationwide companies can differ from one another 6.

What to do next

  1. Check the company name on your declarations page, then look up that company's filings with your state insurance department. Our explainer on what a rate filing is shows how to read one.
  2. Compare the renewal with last term line by line, using our guide to reading a renewal notice.
  3. Ask your Nationwide agent what changed: rating factors, discounts, drivers, vehicles or a state filing.
  4. Compare quotes from several insurers. Prices for the same driver can differ widely between companies. You can compare quotes here.
  5. Contact your state insurance department with questions about a filing or how your policy was rated. Texas readers can start with our Texas page.
