Why Did My American Family Insurance Go Up?
American Family's results and its auto rate filings in Texas, Connecticut and Oklahoma explain why its prices rose, and why some filings still rise in 2026.
American Family's auto prices went up because the company spent two years paying out more than it took in. Its property and casualty business lost $1.5 billion on underwriting in 2022 and $1.7 billion in 2023, according to coverage of its annual results, and its leaders pointed to inflation in used vehicles, parts and repairs 1. The company then raised rates: in 2024 its revenue rose 17% to $20 billion, driven by rate increases and investment income, according to the same coverage a year later 2.
State records show those increases at the company level. In Texas, American Family Connect Property and Casualty Insurance Company filed auto increases of 15.4% in June 2023 and 15.0% in February 2024, and it has kept filing smaller increases since, including 4.8% in March 2026 4. Each figure is an average for that company's existing policyholders in one state, not a prediction for any one renewal. This page lays out what the records show and what to check on your own policy. Which American Family company insures you
American Family is a group of companies, and each legal company files its own rates in each state. The auto filings we could verify in state records, in Texas, Connecticut and Oklahoma, were made by American Family Connect Property and Casualty Insurance Company 4 6 8. Many American Family customers are insured by other companies in the group, and their rates follow those companies' own filings. The company printed on your declarations page tells you which filings apply to you.
The losses behind the increases
American Family is a mutual company, and its annual results are the clearest record of why prices rose.
| Year | Combined ratio, all property and casualty lines | Net underwriting result |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 111.4 1 | Loss of $1.5 billion 1 |
| 2023 | 110.8 1 | Loss of $1.7 billion 1 |
| 2024 | 96.6 2 | Gain of $603 million 2 |
| 2025 | 84.6 3 | Gain of $2.6 billion 3 |
A combined ratio above 100 means claims and expenses exceeded premium. These figures cover auto, homeowners and commercial lines together, so they show the group's position rather than auto alone 1 2.
In 2023, catastrophe claims reached a record $3.5 billion, and chief executive Bill Westrate said broad-based inflation in used vehicles, parts, construction materials and repairs was outside the company's control 1. Auto claims cost more when a car is worth more and costs more to fix, and those costs feed the next round of rate filings.
In 2024, direct written premium rose 13.9% to $19.6 billion while policies in force fell 2.8% to 13.6 million, which points to a higher average premium per policy 2. The report says profit-focused strategies affected policy retention and new business 2. By 2025 the combined ratio had improved to 84.6, which the company attributed mainly to lower catastrophe and non-catastrophe losses; direct written premium fell 5.6% and policies in force fell 11% to 12.1 million, or 3% excluding strategic actions such as the 2024 sale of The General 3.
Texas filings by American Family Connect
The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) describes the percent change on a filing as the estimated impact on existing policyholders, which may be higher or lower for any one person; a closed filing means TDI has finished its review 5. Each filing below is closed with the closed type "Reviewed" in TDI's data 4.
| Received | Percent change | Effective date | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 19, 2026 | 4.8% 4 | June 15, 2026 (renewal) | Closed |
| August 27, 2025 | 6.8% 4 | December 15, 2025 | Closed |
| February 13, 2025 | 5.4% 4 | June 8, 2025 | Closed |
| August 26, 2024 | 3.4% 4 | October 26, 2024 | Closed |
| February 7, 2024 | 15.0% 4 | March 28, 2024 | Closed |
| June 6, 2023 | 15.4% 4 | September 28, 2023 | Closed |
| December 21, 2022 | 12.2% 4 | March 28, 2023 | Closed |
| May 6, 2022 | 10.5% 4 | August 23, 2022 | Closed |
| March 22, 2022 | 8.9% 4 | May 28, 2022 | Closed |
Every nonzero filing listed for this company since 2022 is an increase 4. The largest came in 2023 and early 2024, after the group's underwriting losses of 2022 and 2023, and the later ones are smaller. Because none of these filings is a decrease, a Texas customer insured by this company may have seen a filed increase reach the policy in each of those years.
Connecticut and Oklahoma
Connecticut's Insurance Department publishes a yearly table of the private passenger auto rate filings it approved, split into liability and physical damage (the collision and comprehensive part of a policy). For American Family Connect Property and Casualty Insurance Company it lists:
| Effective (new business) | Liability | Physical damage | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 6, 2024 | 17.8% 6 | 1.6% 6 | 9.4% 6 |
| September 28, 2024 | 13.7% 6 | 13.7% 6 | 13.7% 6 |
| August 30, 2025 | 8.8% 7 | 0.5% 7 | 4.7% 7 |
The liability side rose much faster than physical damage in two of the three filings 6 7. Liability covers injuries and damage you cause to others, so a policy that is mostly liability coverage may have seen more of these increases than one weighted toward collision and comprehensive. Connecticut's department said rate pressure for auto continued in 2025 but improved, tied to supply chain constraints and inflation 7.
In Oklahoma, the Insurance Department's report of 2026 private passenger auto filings lists American Family Connect Property and Casualty Insurance Company under SERFF tracking number PRCA-134820141 with an overall rate impact of 10.700% and a requested renewal effective date of April 21, 2026 8.
Why your own American Family bill may have gone up
American Family's own consumer guide lists reasons that can raise a rate even without a claim: higher repair costs for newer cars with expensive technology, higher medical costs, moving to an area with different traffic, more drivers on the road, severe weather claims and more uninsured motorist claims 9. On your own policy, also check for:
- A new accident, claim or ticket on any listed driver.
- An added driver or vehicle, especially a teen driver. See adding a teen driver.
- A lost discount. See why discounts disappear at renewal.
- A coverage change, such as higher limits or a lower deductible.
- A filing by your company in your state. The tables above show increases continuing into 2026 for at least one American Family company 4 8.
