Why Did My State Farm Insurance Go Up?

State Farm auto prices rose after billions in underwriting losses and approved California increases, then began falling in 2026. What the records show.

State Farm auto customers saw higher prices in 2023, 2024 and early 2025 mainly because the company was paying out more in claims and expenses than it collected in premium, and it filed for large increases to close that gap. Its own results show an auto underwriting loss of $9.7 billion in 2023, and in California the state approved two double-digit increases in a row for State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company 4 1 2 3.

The picture has since turned. State Farm reported an auto underwriting gain for 2025 and says it has cut auto rates in 40 states, by an average of roughly 10 percent over the past year 5 6. If your bill still went up, the reason is more likely to be something specific to your policy, your car or your area than a company-wide increase. Which State Farm company sets your auto rate

State Farm is a brand. The legal company named in the auto rate records below is State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company 1 6. State Farm's home insurance is a separate line with its own filings, so news about State Farm home insurance rates does not tell you anything about your car policy. When you read about a "State Farm rate increase," check which company and which line of insurance the story is about.

Rate changes are filed state by state. A percentage in a filing is an average across that company's existing policyholders in that state. Some customers see more, some less, and some see a decrease in the same filing.

The losses behind the increases

State Farm publishes its property and casualty results each year. They show how far behind its auto prices had fallen.

YearAuto earned premiumAuto claims and adjustment expensesAuto underwriting result
2023$56.1 billion$53.4 billionLoss of $9.7 billion 4
2024$67.5 billion$56.2 billionLoss of $2.7 billion 4
2025$71.3 billion$52.6 billionGain of $4.6 billion 5

On top of claims, the company also reported other underwriting expenses of $12.4 billion in 2023 and $14.0 billion in 2024 4. Put simply, in 2023 claims plus running costs were well above what customers paid. Earned premium then rose from $56.1 billion to $67.5 billion in a single year, which is what higher rates across millions of policies look like from the company's side 4. State Farm describes the 2024 change as "significant improvement in auto lines underwriting results" 4.

California: two approved increases in a row

California requires approval before an auto rate change takes effect, and the Department of Insurance publishes the settlement documents for contested filings. Two of them involve State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company.

  • 2024: the company asked for an overall 24.6% increase on its California private passenger auto line. The settlement with the department set it at 21.0%, with an effective date of February 26, 2024 1.
  • 2025: the company asked for an overall 23.4% increase. The settlement found 17.7% supportable, for policies with a target effective date on or after January 31, 2025 2. News coverage reported the 17.7% as an approved average increase affecting about 4 million customers 3.

The 2024 settlement also shows that not every part of the policy rose by the same amount. Comprehensive coverage went up 26.6%, collision 19%, and bodily injury and property damage liability 22.2%, while one smaller liability category fell 9.6% 1. That is one reason two California neighbors could see very different increases: the mix of coverages on each policy changes the result.

According to the reporting on the second filing, State Farm told regulators the first increase was not enough to cover higher costs tied to lingering pandemic supply chain problems and labor shortages, which raised auto repair costs and vehicle values 3. When a car is worth more and costs more to fix, collision and comprehensive claims cost more too.

Why prices are now moving down

State Farm's 2025 results show auto claims and adjustment expenses fell to $52.6 billion while earned premium rose to $71.3 billion, producing an underwriting gain of $4.6 billion 5. The company credits lower auto repair costs and fewer collisions in 2025, along with strong underwriting performance, for the cuts that followed 6.

In March 2026, State Farm said State Farm Mutual had reduced auto rates in 40 states, by an average of roughly 10 percent over the past year, which it put at about $4.6 billion a year in lower total premiums 6. It also announced a one-time cash back dividend for qualifying auto customers totaling $5 billion, separate from the rate cuts 5 6.

Florida gives a state-level example. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation said State Farm had announced a dividend for Florida policyholders of nearly $533 million, about $173 per vehicle, that the office had approved several State Farm rate reductions since 2024, and that the latest requested decrease was 10% 7.

These are averages and totals. State Farm's release describes savings for customers in aggregate; it does not say that every policy got cheaper 6.

Why your own State Farm bill may still have gone up

A company-wide rate cut and a higher renewal for you can both be true. Common reasons:

  • Your rating factors changed. A new accident, ticket or claim, a move to a different ZIP code, a new driver in the household, or a change in how far you drive can all move the price at renewal.
  • Your vehicle changed or aged differently than expected. Swapping cars, adding a vehicle or a model whose repair costs run high can raise the collision and comprehensive part of the bill, the same parts that rose fastest in the California filing 1.
  • A discount ended. Multi-policy, safe-driver, good-student or telematics discounts can drop off when circumstances change. See why discounts disappear at renewal.
  • Your state's timing differs. Rate changes are filed and approved state by state, so a cut announced nationally may not have reached your state, or may have been smaller there.
  • Coverage changed. Higher limits, a lower deductible or added coverages raise the price even if the base rate falls.

What to do next

  1. Read your renewal notice line by line. Compare each coverage's price with last term. Our guide on how to read a renewal notice shows where to look.
  2. Ask your State Farm agent which factors changed. You can ask whether the change came from a rate filing in your state, a change on your policy, or a lost discount.
  3. Review coverage and deductible. On an older car, check whether collision and comprehensive still make sense for you. Raising a deductible lowers the premium but raises what you pay after a claim.
  4. Compare quotes from several insurers. Prices for the same driver can differ widely between companies, and comparing is the only way to see where you stand. You can compare quotes here.
  5. Contact your state insurance department if you have questions about a filing or how your insurer treated you. Many departments publish rate filings and take consumer complaints.
