Why Did My Germania Insurance Go Up?
Germania's Texas auto filings rose through 2022 and 2023, then turned to decreases. A 2026 TDI order also covers renewals priced off the filed rates.
Germania customers saw their auto prices climb mainly in 2022 and 2023, when the three Germania insurers filed a series of increases with the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). The largest was a 16.1% average increase for all three companies, received October 2, 2023, after a filing of 10.9% to 12.3% received December 20, 2022 and several smaller increases in 2022 and 2023 1. Since March 2025, every Germania auto filing with a nonzero change has been a decrease 1.
There is a second, separate issue. In July 2026, TDI entered a consent order after the Germania companies self-reported that a data loading error caused some personal auto policyholders to be charged rates different from those on file; the companies represent that the overcharges affected more than 12,000 Texas policies 2. The order requires refunds with interest to policyholders who were overcharged on renewals with effective dates from May 1, 2022 through March 1, 2026 2. This page covers both. Each filing percentage is an average for a company's existing policyholders, not a forecast for any one bill. We are not affiliated with the insurers named.
Which Germania company insures you
Germania is a brand. The TDI consent order names three Texas insurers: Germania Insurance Company, Germania Fire & Casualty Company and Germania Select Insurance Company, each a Texas fire and casualty insurer with a Brenham mailing address 2. Each files its own auto rates, usually together under one SERFF tracking number, and the percentages can differ slightly between them 1.
TDI's data also lists auto filings by Home State County Mutual Insurance Company for products whose names begin with "Germania" 3. The data does not explain that arrangement, but if your declarations page names Home State County Mutual Insurance Company, its filings are the ones that apply to you. The company printed on your declarations page is always the one to check.
How Texas rate filings work
TDI says it "doesn't set insurance rates or premiums," and that companies can use new rates the same day they send them to TDI or choose a later effective date 5. TDI reviews the filing afterward against state law 5. It describes the percent change as "the estimated impact that the rate change has on existing policyholders," which can be higher or lower for an individual 4. A pending filing is still under review; a closed filing means TDI is done with its review 4. Every closed Germania filing below carries the closed type "Reviewed" in TDI's data 1.

Read down the lower half of the table and the reason for higher renewals in 2022 to 2024 is plain: eight increases in under two years, with the October 2023 filing the largest 1. Each one reached a policy at its first renewal after the effective date, so a policyholder could have absorbed several in a row. The upper half shows the reverse since early 2025, including a 7.8% to 7.9% decrease received January 16, 2026 1. The most recent filing, received September 1, 2026, is still pending 1.
The Home State County Mutual filings for Germania-named products follow a similar path, including a 16.1% increase received October 10, 2023 and a 7.3% decrease received January 26, 2026 3.
The filing data gives percentages and dates but not reasons, and we did not find a current public statement from Germania explaining these filings, so we do not guess at them.
The 2026 consent order on rates charged
Separately from the filings, TDI's Commissioner's Order No. 2026-10039, dated July 21, 2026, is a consent order with Germania Select Insurance Company, Germania Fire & Casualty Company and Germania Insurance Company 2. According to its findings:
- In March 2026 the companies told TDI they had found a rating error for certain personal auto policies. Incorrect data was used to calculate renewal premiums, causing both overcharges and undercharges 2.
- The companies represent that the overcharges affected more than 12,000 Texas policies 2.
- The companies represent that they began a refund program on their own before the order 2.
The order concludes that the companies violated Texas Insurance Code section 2251.101 by charging rates different from those on file 2. It requires them to review personal auto policies renewed in Texas with effective dates from May 1, 2022 through March 1, 2026, recalculate each premium at the filed rate, and refund any overcharge plus simple interest at 5% per year, by check or account credit, on or before October 1, 2026 2.
What this means for a reader: if you renewed an auto policy with one of these three Germania companies in that window, part of a price increase you noticed may have come from this error rather than from a filed rate change. The order describes undercharges too, and it requires refunds only for overcharges 2. Questions about whether a refund applies to your policy go to Germania first and then to TDI; our Texas page lists TDI's contact details. The order does not name Home State County Mutual Insurance Company.
Why your own Germania bill may still have gone up
Recent filings are decreases, but a renewal can still rise:
- A new accident, claim or ticket on any listed driver.
- A change in vehicles or drivers, such as adding a teen driver. See adding a teen driver.
- A move to a different area.
- A lost discount or a coverage change. See why discounts disappear at renewal.
- Timing: a pending decrease may not yet have reached your renewal 1.
What to do next
- Check the company name on your declarations page and match it to the table above.
- Compare the renewal with last term line by line, using our guide to reading a renewal notice.
- Ask Germania or your agent what changed on your policy, and whether your policy was part of the refund review.
- Look up filings yourself with TDI's rate filing search 4. Our explainer on what a rate filing is covers how to read one.
- Compare quotes from several insurers. Prices for the same driver can differ widely. You can compare quotes here.
