Why Did My AAA Insurance Go Up?
AAA car insurance comes from your club's insurer. The Texas and California records show increases from 2022 to 2024, then decreases and flat filings.
If your AAA car insurance went up, the answer depends on which AAA club you belong to, because each club works with its own insurer and each insurer files its own rates. In Texas, Auto Club County Mutual Insurance Company filed average increases of 9.0% and 10.0% in 2022, 15.5% in 2023 and 11.5% in 2024 1. In California, CSAA Insurance Exchange settled two rate applications with the Department of Insurance and a consumer group at overall increases of 16.7% (for policies effective September 1, 2023) and 9.5% (no sooner than April 1, 2024), each to take effect with the Commissioner's approval 8 9.
Since then the Texas filings have turned to decreases and no-change filings, including a 3.0% decrease that is still pending 1. Each percentage is an average for the insurer's existing policyholders on that line, not a forecast for any one bill. This page explains how AAA insurance is organized, what the records show and what to check on your own policy. We are not affiliated with the insurers named.
AAA is a club; the insurer depends on your club
AAA insurance is sold through regional AAA clubs. The club sells you membership and can act as the agent, while a separate insurance company writes the policy. Which company that is depends on your club:
- AAA Texas: its disclosure says AAA personal lines are provided by its affiliate insurers, "Auto Club County Mutual Insurance Company for auto," and that "AAA Texas acts as an agent" 5.
- Automobile Club of Southern California and affiliated clubs: the California Department of Insurance describes the Interinsurance Exchange of the Automobile Club as a reciprocal insurer that sells mainly to members of the Automobile Club of Southern California and its affiliates 4. In 2023 it wrote $4.6 billion in direct premiums, 93.9% of it in California and 81.8% of it automobile insurance 4. The same report says the Exchange manages Auto Club County Mutual and takes on 100% of its private passenger auto business through reinsurance 4.
- Clubs served by CSAA Insurance Group: CSAA lists Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington DC and Wyoming, plus portions of California and several other states, with insurance "provided by CSAA Insurance Exchange" 6.
- Other clubs use other arrangements. AAA Club Alliance, for example, says its policies are underwritten by "various insurance providers including CSAA Insurance Group" 7.
So two AAA members in neighboring states, or even in the same state, can be insured by different companies with different filings. The insurer named on your declarations page is the one whose rates apply to you.
Texas: Auto Club County Mutual's filings
The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) publishes each filing's percent change, which it calls the estimated impact on existing policyholders 12. These are Auto Club County Mutual's "Texas Personal Auto" filings with a nonzero change since 2021, newest first 1:
| Received | Percent change | Effective (new / renewal) | Status as listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| September 4, 2026 | -3.0% 1 | January 1, 2027 / February 1, 2027 | Pending |
| May 16, 2025 | -2.5% 1 | June 1, 2025 / September 1, 2025 | Closed, Reviewed |
| March 21, 2025 | -1.9% 1 | April 1, 2025 / July 17, 2025 | Closed, Reviewed |
| March 6, 2024 | 11.5% 1 | November 1, 2024 / November 1, 2024 | Closed, Reviewed |
| June 20, 2023 | 15.5% 1 | September 1, 2023 / September 1, 2023 | Closed, Reviewed |
| October 25, 2022 | 10.0% 1 | January 1, 2023 / January 1, 2023 | Closed, Reviewed |
| June 29, 2022 | 9.0% 1 | September 1, 2022 / September 1, 2022 | Closed, Reviewed |
| October 8, 2021 | 5.0% 1 | December 31, 2021 / December 31, 2021 | Closed, Reviewed |
TDI says a pending filing is one it is still reviewing, and the closed type "Reviewed" means it reviewed the filing and closed it 12. That is not the same as an approval. Five filings received from October 2025 to May 2026 show a 0.0% change 1; TDI says that means only rules or items that do not affect premium changed, or that the combined impact is zero 12.
On October 8, 2026, TDI cited a decrease that matches this pending filing: "Auto Club County Mutual Insurance Company filed a 3% rate decrease, impacting 235,000 policyholders" 3.
California: two CSAA settlements
In California, the Department of Insurance publishes settlements reached after a consumer group intervenes in a rate application. Both CSAA settlements involved Consumer Watchdog and say the change takes effect with the Commissioner's approval 8 9.
- 2023: CSAA Insurance Exchange filed on February 1, 2023 for an overall 25% increase on its auto line. The settlement says the parties agree that "an overall rate increase of 16.7% is supportable," to be implemented for policies effective September 1, 2023, with the Commissioner's approval 8.
- 2024: CSAA Insurance Exchange filed on September 7, 2023 for an overall 28% increase. The parties agreed that an overall increase of 9.5% complies with the law, effective for new and renewal business no sooner than April 1, 2024, and only once approved by the Commissioner 9.
The 2024 settlement shows how unevenly a change can land. Comprehensive rose 19.7%, uninsured motorist bodily injury 16.1%, bodily injury 13.2% and collision 6.5%, while medical payments fell 7.4% 9. A policy heavy in comprehensive coverage could see more than the 9.5% average; one without it, less.
We did not find a published auto rate settlement for the Interinsurance Exchange of the Automobile Club in the department's commissioner orders, so we do not list one.
Connecticut: CSAA companies
Connecticut's Insurance Department lists the private passenger auto changes it approved each year. For CSAA companies it shows 10 11:
| Company | Effective (new) | Liability | Physical damage | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CSAA Affinity Insurance Company | January 13, 2024 | 18.4% 10 | 22.3% 10 | 20.0% 10 |
| CSAA General Insurance Company | June 5, 2024 | 28.6% 10 | 43.5% 10 | 32.5% 10 |
| CSAA Affinity Insurance Company | April 27, 2025 | 8.1% 11 | 2.4% 11 | 5.9% 11 |
| CSAA Affinity Insurance Company | November 9, 2025 | 0.0% 11 | 0.0% 11 | 0.0% 11 |
Physical damage is the collision and comprehensive part of a policy.
Why AAA insurers' costs rose
The filings give percentages but few reasons. TDI's 2025 report, which lists Auto Club County Mutual under the Auto Club Enterprises Insurance Group and uses figures companies report themselves, shows that group with a net underwriting loss of $46,854,318 on Texas private passenger auto in 2025 and a loss ratio of 69.86 2. It describes the two 2025 Texas decreases as revisions to rating factors such as tier, prior insurance and the multi-car discount, and a change to the advance purchase discount 2. We found no statement from CSAA explaining its California or Connecticut increases, so we do not guess at them.
Why your own AAA bill may still have gone up
A filed decrease and a higher renewal can both be true. Common reasons:
- Your coverage mix. Coverages moved by different amounts in the California settlement 9.
- Rating factors. The 2025 Texas decreases changed individual factors, so some drivers' prices may rise while the average falls 2.
- A new accident, claim or ticket, or a change in vehicles or drivers. See adding a teen driver.
- A move to a different ZIP code or club territory.
- A lost discount. See why discounts disappear at renewal.
- Timing. A change reaches a policy only at its first renewal on or after the effective date.
What to do next
- Find the insurer's name on your declarations page, not just the AAA logo.
- Compare the renewal with last term line by line. Our guide to reading a renewal notice shows where to look.
- Ask your AAA agent what changed: drivers, vehicles, coverages, discounts or rating factors.
- Look up the filing. Our explainer on what a rate filing is covers how. See the Texas and California pages, or browse all states.
- Compare quotes from several insurers. Prices for the same driver can differ widely. You can compare quotes here.
